Who Was William Marshal:
William Marshal, born around 1146, rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most celebrated knights and statesmen in medieval England. Originally a landless younger son, his exceptional martial prowess and unwavering loyalty quickly brought him to prominence. He served five English kings, including Henry II, Richard I, and John, demonstrating remarkable political acumen and military skill throughout his long career. Marshal’s strategic brilliance was evident in his leadership during the First Barons’ War, where he played a pivotal role in securing the English throne for the young Henry III.

His legendary reputation as a knight was solidified through numerous tournament victories across Europe, earning him considerable wealth and renown. Beyond his martial achievements, William Marshal was deeply respected for his integrity, wisdom, and adherence to the knightly code. He was instrumental in reissuing the Magna Carta in 1216, helping to stabilize the kingdom after years of unrest. As Regent of England for Henry III, he effectively governed the country and ensured a smooth transition of power. William Marshal’s life stands as a testament to medieval chivalry and the power of individual merit, leaving an enduring legacy as “the greatest knight who ever lived.” He died in 1219, widely mourned and remembered as a true pillar of the realm.

Our William is depicted in a more Knights Templar style, afterall there is a lifesize monument in the Temple Church in London.
