Description
Princess “Gwen” Chess piece.
Our figure was inspired by the stories of Princess Gwenllian.
Princess Gwenllian ferch Gruffudd stands as a singular figure of defiance in 12th-century Wales, representing the fierce resistance against Norman encroachment. As the daughter of the King of Gwynedd and wife to the Prince of Deheubarth, she embodied a powerful alliance between the nation’s primary royal houses. Her historical legacy was forged in 1136 during the Great Welsh Revolt; while her husband was away seeking reinforcements, Gwenllian took the extraordinary step of personally leading a Welsh army into battle near Kidwelly Castle.
Though her forces were ultimately defeated and she was captured and executed on the battlefield, her death backfired on the Norman invaders. The dishonorable treatment of a noblewoman sparked such intense national outrage that it served as a catalyst for a massive, successful Welsh uprising. Today, the site of her final stand, Maes Gwenllian, remains a permanent landmark of her bravery, cementing her status as a legendary “warrior princess” and a timeless symbol of Welsh patriotism.
Our figure is hand made in our craft workshop in West Wales.
Gwen is about 75mm tall and weighs around 50gms.
We make all our figures from a polyresin formula.
As we hand finish all our chess pieces, colours and finish may vary slightly. This makes every piece unique.
Where possible we reuse all wrapping and packing.
All energy used at the workshop is from renewable sources.
