A Brief History:

Oliver Cromwell & The Great SealOliver Cromwell remains one of the most compelling and controversial figures in British history. Rising from a country gentleman to a key military leader during the English Civil War, he led the Parliamentarian forces (“Roundheads”) against King Charles I. Following the execution of the king in 1649 and the establishment of the Commonwealth, Cromwell became the chief political figure in Britain. On December 16, 1653, he was sworn in as Lord Protector of England, Scotland, and Ireland—a position he held until his death on September 3, 1658.During his protectorate, official state documents were validated using Great Seals such as this one. Depicting Cromwell as an equestrian ruler clad in armor, the seal conveyed state authority and military command, while remaining true to his famous insistence on realistic portraiture without flattery.
