Description
The Seal of Virginia.
Dates back to the early foundation of Virginia as a colony of Great Britain.
The seal depicts a Native American giving the king some tobacco. (Did kings smoke?)
The inscription on the seal is “SIGILLUM . PROVINCIAE . NOSTRAE . DE . VIRGINIA . IN . AMERICA” and on the bottom: “EN DAT VIRGINIA QUARTAM.”
Which translates as “Seal of our colony in Virginia in America” and “and behold Virginia makes the fourth”. This refers to being the fourth colony.
The seal is a replica made from an impression taken in the 1970s from the original, now held in the National Archives in London.
The seal is around 10cm in diameter and weighs around 120gms.
