Who Was King Offa? His Story & Legacy Today
King Offa ruled the kingdom of Mercia from AD 757 until his death in 796, becoming one of the most powerful Anglo-Saxon monarchs before Alfred the Great. Known for his ambition, statecraft, and trade connections with Continental Europe, Offa revolutionized English currency by introducing the silver penny—a standardized coin featured in artwork like this plaque.
Today, Offa is best remembered for Offa’s Dyke, a monumental earthwork boundary stretches over 140 miles along the Welsh border. Today, the dyke endures as a celebrated National Trail, symbolising the historic frontier between England and Wales and standing as a testament to Offa’s grand vision and lasting mark on the British landscape. The Dyke roughly traces the border between the England and Wales. It crosses through the counties of Monmouthshire, Gloucestershire, Powys, Herefordshire, Shropshire, Wrexham, Denbighshire, and Flintshire.
