Description

Coins have been discovered in the York area of England which show a Raven and the inscription ANLAF CVNVNC. They are known as “Raven Pennies” and were made by the ruler of York, who was a Viking called Olaf Guthfrithson, or ANLAF. They were minted during his reign as king of York between 939–941.

Anlaf was from a Royal Family from Dublin. He fought at the Battle of Brunenburgh. After which he was expelled by the victor King Æthelstan of England. Only after Æthelstans death, did Anlaf return and rule the York region.
It was during his short reign the coins were minted. The distinctive Raven design has inspired and copied by many modern day reenactors. The inscription reads +ANLAF CVNVNC. which means means “King Anlaf”.
